Fall's the time to repair the price paid for ?fun in the sun? and prepare for cooler, dryer air. Then experiment with the season's new looks!

As healthy as being outdoors can feel, the ultraviolet rays of the sun can damage skin cells through sunscreens and sun blocks.** Chlorine and other chemicals in hot tubs and pools, salt water at the beach, and super-conditioned air can leach away nutrients and cause dryness. What to do? Have some fun ... create a ?spa? environment in your bath area and follow these simple steps.

Step one in reversing the effects of summer is to remove the dead surface skin cells that have built up. For your face, select a mask or microdermabrasion product that?s appropriate for your skin type (dry, normal, combination, oily, blemish-prone). Also pick an exfoliator made specifically for the lips. For your body, choose a scrub or buffing cream. If you have sensitive skin, avoid scents and perfumes since they can be irritants. Then follow the product directions for application and use, massaging gently.

Step two is to moisturize the newer, younger skin you've revealed. Liberally apply a facial moisturizer (paying special attention to the neck and d?collet?), eye cream, lip balm, and body lotion (or cream), allowing time for the products to be absorbed into your skin. You want to replace the moisture that?s been stripped away during cleansing, restore what?s been lost during the summer and start to protect against cold weather and dry indoor heat.

Now, after each cleansing, apply moisturizers and, if necessary, increase the intensity of the products. At night, use a specially formulated product for your face that works while you sleep. For problem areas such as elbows, knees, hands and feet, put on extra lotion or cream (wear mitts and footies to bed, as needed). During the day, continue to wear sunscreen or sun block to protect your skin from ultraviolet rays.

As sun exposure or a tan fades, adjust your foundation and/or powder to a lighter shade. Test the shade along your jaw line to blend with both your face and neck; watch to see if it ?disappears? into your skin.

The lighter, sun-kissed colors of summer typically transition to darker, earthier colors in fall. If you?re trying to adapt the season's shades or find the hues that work best for you, try these tricks.

For eyes, eye shadows with a base or elements of color opposite that of your eyes (on the color wheel) will make your eyes stand out the most. Consider a wide spectrum of the colors that are in style. If teal?s fashionable, experiment with different tints of blues and greens and blue-greens. Mix colors or tone them down with neutrals until you find the ones that complement your face and wardrobe.

For cheeks and lips, the most flattering colors are usually the ones that pick up the natural warm tones in your face.

Once you're ready, enjoy the season!

Electric fan once was an essential heatstroke prevention item in summer for many families. Though the number of families that use electric fans has somewhat decreased due to the popularity of the air conditioner, staying in an air conditioning room for too long can cause the immunity of our body to drop, some can easily catch cold, get a fever, contract allergic rhinitis and allergic asthma, and more. These are all because of the bad air quality caused by almost no circulations in an air conditioning room, which in turn multiples the cause of disease microorganism. Since electric fan is convenient to use, it blows naturally, and does not pollute the air, from the environmental protection and health point of view, it should be the first choice when it comes to heatstroke prevention.

The question is: how should we use an electric fan scientifically?

1. Do not get too close to the fan
When using an electric fan, some people prefer to stay very close to the fan and let the wind fiercely blow on them, especially after having strenuous exercises. This may cause the body get indisposed, feeling weary, sultry, incapable, hands and feet may feel aching and limp. In worse case, it may result in headache, fever, cold feeling, or even lead to other diseases. In summer time, the perspiration, radiation, and temperature adjustment of a human body are all mainly through the skin. When sweat evaporated, our body then cools down. But long time blowing in front of an electric fan will cause the surface temperature of our body to quickly drop. This will block the pore, which then causes heat to be kept in our body and makes us feel sultry.

2. Do not chill with the fan for too long
It is especially not healthy if you let the fan runs all night long. Skin surface temperature of any spots that are exposed to the blowing for excessively long time drops, while epidermis blood vessels are still diastolic, this will cause abnormal blood circulation, which in turn will affect excretion of sweat, result in the adjustment of nerve center to lose balance. The internal organs and nerve system must then strengthen their work, consequently fatigue and headache may appear.

3. Use middle or low speed as much as possible
Speaking of the usage of a fan, the bigger the fan blades, the higher the power it requires, then the more energy it consumes. Power consumption of a fan is in direct ratio to speed of its blades. The energy used in 1 hour at the fastest speed would allow the same fan to run nearly 2 hours at the lowest speed. Choose high speed only when necessary, turn to low speed after cooling down, this will reduce consumption of electricity. Use head turning, low speed, natural blowing options in general, choose sleep (if this option is available) at bed time.

4. Put fan at door or window if possible
In summer evenings, put fan at places near a door or a window when possible. This is good for air circulation by blowing cool outdoor air to indoor. Let the fan blow with the wind will increase the efficiency of lowering the temperature.

5. High speed to low speed
When turning on a fan, the switch should be set at high speed first, then change it to the middle or low after it runs at full speed. This is to avoid unnecessary longer motor starting time. Fans with manual tuning options are already set up in the way so the high speed has to be on first. But make sure it is at full speed before switch to lower speed. If you sense any burning smell, turn off the fan and unplug immediately.

When the temperature tops 90 and the soles of your shoes sizzle on the sidewalk, cold therapy is a necessity for summer first-aid. Whether it is ice from your freezer, a bag of frozen vegetables or a convenient commercial cold pack, ice therapy has many more uses than treating bumps and bruises.

Here are five summer first-aid tips for cold therapy:

Chill heat-related illnesses.

During the hot summer months, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be a problem. Symptoms of exhaustion can include dizziness, weakness, a feeling of nausea, excessive sweating and a shallow, quick pulse. With more serious heat stroke, the skin is hot and dry, and mental confusion can occur along with a loss of consciousness. Cold packs can be used to keep the body cool in excessive temperatures, helping to prevent heat exhaustion. Many athletes cool down after a summer event with an icy cold pack on the back of their necks. If symptoms are present, ice packs along with hydration can be used to lower the body temperature to a safe level. Always seek medical attention in the case of heat stroke as this condition can be sudden and deadly.

Ice bug bites.

Let?s face it, insect bites are a nuisance, causing swelling, itching and sometimes pain. Icing a bite immediately will keep the bug poison from spreading to other parts of the body, reduce swelling and inflammation, and numb the area, lessening the need to itch. Use ice therapy on mosquito, bee, spider, fire ant and centipede bites. If an allergic reaction happens or it is a serious bite, such as from the poisonous Brown Recluse Spider, immediately seek medical help.

Keep pets cool.

Even pets can suffer in the summer heat. Keeping them cool can be tricky. An ice pack wrapped in a towel or beneath a thin blanket might do the trick if they decide to snooze on top of it. Ice cubes are a cool treat that some animals enjoy. There are also commercial products made specifically for horses to ice their legs down after a ride. Special caution should be taken to never use a product containing toxins or one that might easily break, endangering a pet if they decide it would be more fun to play with the ice pack than lay on it.

Cool a Burn.

Getting too much sun or being careless around an outside grill can result in summer burns. For minor first degree burns caused by brief contact with a hot object, water or steam, and sunburn, cool the skin by first holding it under running water, then apply a cold pack to numb the pain. If blistering occurs (second or third degree burns) seek medical help.

Cold treatment for night sweats.

Hot summer evenings can mean intense night sweats for menopausal women. A great natural approach to cooling off when awakened by a wave of heat is to tuck a cold pack into the pillowcase so that it lies at the crook of the neck. Within a few minutes, the heat wave will subside, allowing for a restful night?s sleep.

Make sure you have at least one or two cold packs in your freezer for summer first-aid. Chill out and be prepared!

While there are many effective ways to get more energy and build your productivity, I?ve found it very important to pay attention to the seasons.

But wait a minute, you say. Aren't I supposed to be eating great food all of the time?

Yes, you are! And after you understand what foods work best for your body, you should then adjust to fit the seasons. Over the past few years, I've found this to be the best way toget healthy, build my productivity, and increase my energy, for five (3 food and then 2 focus) reasons:

1.Melons ?

? Excellent hydration food
? An energized breakfast boost
? Best eaten on their own for digestion (which also always means energy) purposes
? Excellent calcium source
? High on the list of anticarcinogenic foods

2.Cucumber ?

? Contains 90% water
? Relieves edema
? Effective diuretic
? Cleanses and purifies the blood
? Helps break down protein (again, better digestion!)

3.Alfalfa Sprouts ?

? Lowers cholesterol
? Augments the urinary system
? Excellent source of chlorophyll
? High Food Mineral Source (calcium, iron, potassium ? more!)
? 30% protein by dry weight

Stay Focused on the REAL You for Summer

If we grew up in the United States we most likely grew up with associating summer with getting out of school ?SUMMER VACATION! As adults we tend to want to give ourselves the summer off as well, but we need to renegotiate what that means. Taking a ?break? doesn?t need to mean eating EnergyPoor Foods, but instead can be about tuning in and listening to our individual body and what it needs. Here a couple of ways to do that:

1. Look Local -

Don?t think of summer as all about looking for local summer activities, but also about what is being grown near you. What is the natural message that is being given to you about what to eat this time of year (we are so spoiled by our grocery stores!) Spend some time searching out Farmer?s Markets, Co-ops, or just poking around your grocery store and checking out the produce labels as a clue to where the food has come from. Summer is definitely the time of year to stay away from frozen and canned food ? it really isn?t necessary!

2. Take a Break Everyday -

What do you want for yourself and your body for the summer and always? Use some of the extra daylight energy to connect inward ? not just outward. Think about ways that you can take a daily or weekly ?vacation? for just a few minutes or hours. The more you give yourself some space and time on a regular basis, the less you will need to take a vacation through your food.

Summer is the time when we sweat highly and beating the heat is always high on our agenda. So, we move on to aerated drinks or other beverages. But what we tend to ignore is that we can fight the heat in a much healthier way. That is, through FRUITS. Fruits not only provide us with the required fluids but also the electrolytes which we lose while sweating.

Excess of dehydration can cause headaches, dizziness, loss of concentration and muscle cramping. So to counter that, Summer provides us with a larger variety of fruits so that we can make up the lost fluids and electrolytes. Here is the list of some highly beneficial fruits specially in summers.

1) Watermelon: Watermelon is the best cooler for the body specially in summers as it is high in water. It is rich in Calcium too. The word watermelon itslef brings water in our mouth.

2) Apples: Apples are one of the best source for fibre. Besides that, skin of the apple has antioxidant flavonoids which reduces free radical damage.

3) Muskmelon: Muskmelon with its unique property of rehydrating of body is considered one of the best fruits for summers. Besides being rich in water, it also provides body with Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Iron, Sodium and Potassium.

4) Berry family is always high on the list of fruits for summer. This family is again high in fibre and vitamin C. Strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, blackberries come under the wide roof of berry family. They are also good for diabetics too. Also, they aid in Weight Loss.

5) Mangoes: No one can resist Mangoes in summer. They would be undoubtly the king of summer fruits. They are rich in fibre, beta-carotene and vitamin C.

6) Banana: Last but not the least: Banana helps keep your system cool. Prefer taking bananas in breakfast.

This is the time when you skin needs extra pampering due to exposure from everywhere be it the sun, wind, water, dust, and anything else which affects your skin. The tan causing damage to your skin as well as the UV rays which can be cancerous and can lead to skin cancer. Even though skin tan and sunlight is food for your skin, but over exposure causes problems too.

Having the proper moisturizer and a good sunscreen always helps in the long run. It would rejuvenate your skin in ever manner to just add that glow even during summer. It also causes pigmentation which is also called liver spots, age spots. These are also caused due to over exposure of sunlight. Premature aging, wrinkles, sagging are some of the reasons for taking extra care during summer.

Use water proof sunscreen to avoid loosing the essence of the sunscreen. Apply it at least 15 minutes before you go out in the sun. It will help you in the long run. Have at least 12 glasses of water in a day to avoid dehydration and to protect your skin. It helps in cleansing your bowels so as to be free from any kind of acne or boils which are caused due to such reasons.

Wear proper clothing when out, carry a wide-brimmed hat as it would cover your face and protect your eyes. Such hats protect your hair too from eroding the outer layer of hair and making it coarse. Wearing shades or glasses can also be useful. You can spray sunscreen on your hair which would protect your hair. Avoid being in sun between 11am to 3 pm. If you don?t have hat or cap carry umbrellas and wear loose fitting clothes.

Natural, Radiant skin

That's right, summer is upon us already, which means less emphasis on covering up under layers of foundation, concealer and powder and focusing instead on the natural beauty of our skin. This is all very well for those blessed with perfect, clear skin, but for the rest of us mere mortals, help is at hand! With the proper use of foundation and blusher that peaches and cream/English rose radiance can be yours this summer.

Foundation should be kept as light and dewy as possible. Apply a fluid or cr?me foundation with the fingertips, and blend with a sponge for a flawless finish. Use foundation sparingly, and only where necessary. Certain areas of the face - the forehead, nose and chin - naturally will require more coverage than the cheeks.

Blusher should be applied first to the apples of the cheeks and then swept back and upwards, using light strokes. To keep skin radiant and lustrous, ensure you use a good exfoliator, to remove dull dead skin cells and reveal new skin for a brighter complexion. Follow this with an SPF moisturiser suited to your skin type, bearing in mind many people can use a slightly lighter cream or lotion in the summer months than is required in the winter.

What?s in: perfectly natural complexions. What?s out: heavy bronzer and fake tan. This summer it will be all about pale, milky skin with just a touch of blush across the cheeks and nose. Think pinks and peaches for fairer skin tones, and light golden bronze for darker skins.

Glossy nude lips

After the winter of covering up lips in bold shades, its time to ditch the lip liner and vampy red lipstick in favour of a lighter glossier look. Lips are more delicate and understated this season, think lip tints and sheer glosses, in pink and peachy tones for paler skins and golden bronze hues for darker skins. The whole look should be very fresh and unpretentious. Try Clinique?s Colour Surge Impossibly Glossy lip colours, or Est?e Lauder pure colour crystal gloss. For a little extra coverage and long lasting wet-look colour apply Lanc?me?s juicy rogue, with a dab of ?babydoll? the newest addition to their cult juicy tube collection. As with make-up look, preparation is key, so invest in a lip-exfoliator and start applying a good non-petroleum based lip balm frequently, for kissably soft lips!

Bright n? bold eyeliner

In keeping with previous make-up trends there is still very much a focus on eyes this spring. However the emphasis this season has shifted to eye-liner, and the bigger and brighter the better. Reinvent your night-time look by lining your eyes with kohl or liquid liner, in vivid turquoises, rich purples, azure or aubergine. These work particularly well with a hint of shimmer to open and draw attention to the eye. I recommend Bobbi Browns Long-Wear gel eyeliner, applied with an eyeliner brush, so you can intensify the look as much as you like. You could also try M.A.C pigments, which come in an exhaustive range of colours and textures. Loyal fans of the kohl pencil, try Lanc?me?s Crayon Kh?l in 019 le bleu de jules, a soft aqua-marine blue or Bourjois Khol & Contour Eye Liner in Violet Irise 18, a vibrant lilac-fuchsia.

Finally for all the eye-liner buffs out there, Make-Up Forever?s colour liquid liner, thanks to its ultra fine tip applicator, will give a highly pigmented pearly finish.

Diets play an ever growing role in the lives of many many people from all walks of life. A recent study conducted in the USA, concluded that one third of all US residents have at one point in their lives dieted, or are in the midst of trying to lose weight. Whether its the lack of nutritional knowledge, laziness, or a combination of both, our world is growing, and I am not referring to the planet itself, just us that inhabit it.

The summer season is prime time diet season. Looking good for the summer is such an important requirement for so many people, that they will try anything from the South Beach Diet, to the ever popular, starvation approach in order to attain an acceptible figure.

Telling somebody that eating food is the first thing they need to do in order to loose weight usually results in them never asking your advice again. Well shame on them because what they do not know, is by eating healthy food, your metabolism initiates in order to break down that food into energy that the body needs to function. No food = no metabolism = fat!

Other little additions or in this case subtractions that you can make to your diet to help shed the weight include simply decreasing your portions, not eathing past a certain time of day, and not eathing foods that are not good for you.

Today?s fast paced lifestyle that we are caught up in does not afford us the time to always pick foods sensibly, leading to the purchase of high cal. low protein, cheaply prepared food items that do more arm than good. Taking the time to properly select what you plan to put into your own body and the bodies of your family if you shop for one, should be something that you take very seriously, as it has an impact on your health, and their health. Remember we all only get one crack at the can of life, making the most of it starts with being healthy so we can do just that, make the most of the time we have.

We are home to the very popular South Beach Diet as well as breaking news from The World of Health

Summer is a great time to enjoy fresh produce and being outdoors. Achieving better health doesn't have to be a restrictive, unenjoyable process. Here are four easy ways to improve your health while enjoying the season. See how many of these ideas you can try this month!

1. Berries- Berries are in peak season right now. Choose whichever you prefer- raspberries, blueberries, strawberries and more! In addition to being loaded with vitamins, they?re very easy to eat. I like including berries with my breakfast or alone for a light dessert.

2. Farmer?s Market- Visit a farmer?s market for the freshest produce available, in addition to supporting local farmers! Your local grocery store's produce often travels a great distance, and the transit comes with a price. Your local farmer's market will have the most vitamin-packed fruits and vegetables, and they will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Here's an insider tip: bulk discounts are more likely at the end of the day, when the vendor is eager to lighten their load before packing for home. Remember to bring cash!

3. Free Yoga- Many yoga studios offer a free class to new students, and sometimes bonus free classes are offered for those who bring a friend. Take advantage of these offers and find your favorite studio!

4. Picnic in the Park- Now is the perfect time to have a picnic with a friend or loved one. Remember to bring lots of water, a book you?ve been meaning to read, food that is easy to store & eat- like sandwiches and fruit- and of course sunscreen.

To avoid ants, use talcum powder around your picnic blanket. The ants won?t cross the powder because of the smell. Bring along a sprig of fresh mint to ward off bees as well. To ensure your drinks will remain cold, freeze the drinks you plan to bring along on the night before. Be sure to remember your camera!

Have a great time this summer!

Fitness and nutrition expert, Tracey Redford of Curves International says, ?The inactivity among young people can not be blamed solely on the evolution of Internet technology and television in itself. Child obesity has lead to a number of other health related issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease from the combination of improper nutrition and lack of exercise.?

Redford went on to say, ?We live in a complex society where children of all ages have to contend with social issues such as depression, violence and divorce all having a downward spiraling affect both physically and emotionally. The psychological impact this has on our youth?s triggers an imbalance in eating habits and leads to a lack of motivation creating a domino effect.?

A summer camp experience with weight loss benefits

Last year in Canada alone the government spent over $2 billion on medical procedures surrounding obesity. No matter how many times we read about or see it on the news, children still do not understand the connection between eating, exercise and a healthy body. Rather than pointing fingers and placing blame, we need more resources and programs that can be offered such as summer camp programs specializing in weight loss. These camps are sometimes referred to as ?fat camps? for young children and teens to guide them and educate them on making good healthy choices.

Children and parents shouldn?t be turned off by the words, ?fat camp? which simply means a place where children of all ages can get fit, learn about nutritional balance and have fun doing so. Getting to participate in sports, crafts, and making make new friends while achieving weight loss in a nurturing environment provides a positive alternative for kids, and can pave the way to combat obesity.

The ultimate goal is sustainable healthy weight loss

When children feel they have no options, they continue on the same path of poor eating habits leading to a state of helplessness. Sending a child to a gym where they feel isolated and eventually lose motivation is not the solution either. Redford explains, ?We need far better choices if we want our youth?s to get on track and stay on track. Weight loss camps for pre-teens and teenagers are a viable solution.?

What exactly is a weight loss camp? It?s about building a better self-image and self esteem while promoting health and wellness with individualized programs geared to weight loss that yields long term results. This is the foundation of the whole weight loss summer camp experience. A nutritionist designs an appropriate menu enabling campers to lose the weight and provide the necessary tools to keep the weight off upon returning home from camp. Understanding that the parent?s role is crucial in encouraging proper weight control for their children, the camps provide access to a network of nutritionist across the country.

How to Get Salon Quality Manicures and Pedicures

Summer time is once again upon us. Gone are the thick socks and stifling shoes, and in are the feet-baring sandals that adorn your shoe closet. You know what that means ladies. Pedicure Time! Oh, and while we're talking about pedicures, most of these pointers also apply to manicures.

Shopping List for Success :

1.) Cuticle Stick 2.) Cuticle Oil or Conditioner 3.) Fast Drying Base Coat 4.) Fast Drying Top Coat 5.) Buffer 6.) Large Emory Board

The first thing you need to do is to make sure you start off with clean nails. Clean nails will help the nail polish to bond better with the nail, and help ensure a lasting finish. If you have any nails that are obviously longer than all of the others, then I suggest you use a small pair of nail scissors, not clippers, to give them a trim before anything else is done.

The reason I don't suggest using clippers, at least on your hands, is that they tend to make fragile nails split, because they do not bend with the nail when it is cut off, which stresses the rest of the nail and can cause splitting and breaking down the line. Once the nails have all been evened out with a pair of nail scissors, the filing begins.

Begin with an emory board style nail file, not metal. It is easier to use the larger emory boards rather than the small, because it covers more surface area and tends to be more easily manipulated. Gently file the rough edges of the nails, angling it only slightly around the outer edges, for a somewhat squared off look. You don't want the nails too rounded, since nails typically grow better and faster when they are kept in a squared shape, but you can use your judgement as to your shape preference.

Next, using a rubber tipped cuticle stick, gently shape the cuticles. Some people have barely any cuticle at all, and can skip this step. Others may have thicker, more noticeable cuticles and they are the ones that need to focus on grooming them more. One you've shaped and gently pushed back your cuticles, dab a drop of conditioning cuticle oil and rub in.

Use a makeup brush and dust off any dust leftover from filing. You may even want to go wash your hands so that none of the nail dust or the cuticle conditioner interferes with the application of the polish. The next step is crucial to the longevity of your manicure and pedicure, since it forms a base which provides optimal adherence of your polish to your nail surface.

Use a nail buffer, or the buffing side of your nail file, and lightly buff the surface of your nails, just enough so that you do not see as much luster on the surface as you usually would. Now, take your preferred sheer or clear base coat polish and slick a light layer of it on. Wait a full minute and half at least, and then you may begin to apply your nail color of choice.

This next step is also very important to the longevity of your manicure or pedicure, as it seals you polish in a hard armor which is very tough to chip. Using the top coat of your choice, slick one to two layers of the top coat on and allow to completely dry. And that's it, you're done! Trust me, if you follow all of these steps your manicures and pedicures will last forever! Well, maybe not forever, but you get the picture.

Anyone who starts to read this article is sure to wonder what in the world ever motivated a successful dentist and endodontist such as I to state that ROOT CANAL TREATED TEETH HAVE SIDE EFFECTS which cause many disorders.

Certainly my dental colleagues, particularly those who know me and are familiar with my background, are going to think I have really flipped my lid.

How could a successful dentist, who was honored at the May 199s five day 50th anniversary meeting of the American Association of Endodontists(root canal therapists) for being one of the nineteen founding members of the organization, ever come to publish a book of this critical nature?

Dental Research Specialist Dr. Weston Price, after observing many patients with crippling degenerative diseases not responding to treatment, suspected infected root canal-filled teeth to be the cause.

Dr. Price devised a testing method which disclosed the presence of infection in a tooth which otherwise seemed to be healthy - that is,implanting of the root filled tooth under the skin of a laboratory animal. He found, in almost every case, that when the root-filled tooth of a patient with a degenerative disease was extracted and imbedded in an animal, that animal would develop the patient's disease.

In the beginning, Dr. Price did not know just where the infection was hiding in the tooth, only that a patient's illness was rapidly transferred from his root-filled tooth to laboratory animals in case after case.

Dr. Price later able to culture the bacteria in root-filled teeth and trap their toxins, reproducing a disease in a rabbit by injecting the cultured material into the animal.

Dr. Price discovered a wide variety of degenerative disease to be transferable to rabbits, such as endocarditis and other heart diseases, kidney and bladder diseases, arthritis, rheumatism, mental diseases, lung problems, pregrancy complications, almost any degenerative problem - and after extraction of these teeth,a large percentage of patients recovered from their illnesses.

When sound, uninfected natural teeth or other sterile objects were implanted in animals, no adverse health effects were experienced.

Why this important research was forced underground, and has remained virtually unknown since its 1923 publication, will be covered in later chapters. If the patient had kidney trouble, the rabbit developed kidney involvement; if eye trouble, the rabbit's eye failed. Heart trouble, rheumatism, stomach ulcers, bladder infections, ovarian diseases, phletitis, osteomyelitis, whatever disease, the rabbit is poor- died within two weeks.

Dr. Price tested the theory further by implanting sound natural teeth under rabbits' skins, such as healthy teeth removed for orthodontic tooth-straightening or those which were impacted and couldn't grow in properly, In addition, sterilized dimes and other coins were implanted and, in each instance, nothing detrimental happened to the rabbits.

The human body consists largely of water -- muscle tissue, for example, is a surprising 75%. In the course of a normal day, we lose some of this water, and, like a car with a leaky radiator, if we don't constantly replace what we lose, we can go from well-oiled machine to wheezing wreck.

Everyone has seen television footage of marathon runners stumbling towards the finish line, their disorientation and spastic-like movements clearly indicating an extreme state of dehydration. These graphic images highlight the crucial role that water plays in virtually every bodily process, and the problems that can occur when it is deficient.

But it's not only masochistic athletes who fall prey to dehydration. It's very easy, especially in summer, to spend too long playing or working in the sun and forget to replace the moisture lost through even relatively mild exertions. That throbbing headache is the body's friendly reminder to, Drink more water next time, dummy!

Many health practitioners believe that a large proportion of the North American population suffers chronically from mild dehydration. This condition is blamed for symptoms such as fatigue and poor metabolism and it may also contribute to the development of other illnesses, including rheumatoid arthritis, high cholesterol and blood pressure, and many of the diseases associated with aging.

How could such an abnormal situation come about? A poor diet, deficient in moisture-rich fruit and vegetables, is no doubt partly responsible.

Another food-related cause is that people don't seem to realize they are thirsty anymore: Apparently, 37% of the population mistakes thirst for hunger. This causes them to compound their health problems by overeating. For these people, a simple glass of water may be the best diet they ever tried.

What You Need to Know About Hydration

People are often surprised to learn that they can lose 2.5 liters of water per day despite minimal activity. Even while sitting on the couch watching television, water is lost with every breath. Obviously, the higher temperatures and increased physical activity of summertime will markedly increase the amount of water that most of us will lose each day.

How much water do we need to drink to be fully hydrated? As a starting point, The Institute of Medicine advises men to drink 3.0 liters (13 cups) per day and women 2.2 liters (9 cups). You should then estimate whether your bodyweight and level of activity warrants more or less than the average person and set that as your daily goal.

What is the best source for our daily water quota? Health authorities advise us to minimize alcoholic, caffeinated, and sugar-rich beverages because of their poor hydrating qualities. Fruit juice is expensive and sometimes sugar-laden. The simplest solution -- ordinary tap water --is highly variable: It is often so over-processed that it tastes dead and is devoid of any useful nutrients. Conversely, it can be a foul-tasting chemical cocktail. Many turn to bottled water as an alternative, but this is expensive, inconvenient, and a lottery in regard to composition.

So, is there another option available that can provide good-tasting, effectively hydrating water at an affordable price? Yes there is: home ionized water.

The Magic of Ionized Water

Those who have sipped from a clear mountain stream have experienced the sort of water that our bodies have been designed by nature to respond to.

The main reason for the refreshing taste of wild, flowing water is that it becomes ionized as it crashes through the countryside, picking up naturally occurring alkaline electrolytes along the way.

But its much more than just a nice tasting drop that encourages us to fully hydrate. The alkaline nature of this water enables it to act like an expensive sports drink, neutralizing the acids that build up in our bodies due to normal metabolic processes and exercise. The electrolytes also act as antioxidants, scavenging for free radicals that, if left unchecked, progressively degenerate our body tissues.

A Mountain Stream in Your Home

Fortunately, we don't have to head into the wilderness every time we want to benefit from nature's perfect hydrating fluid. A water ionizer is a device that turns ordinary tap water into clean alkaline ionized water --every time the tap is turned on. It purifies and enhances domestic water in a two-step process. First, harmful contaminants are filtered out, and then electrolysis is used to split the flow into two separate streams: ionized alkaline water for drinking and cooking; and ionized acid water for other household uses.

Users of water ionizers often describe the taste as smooth and silky.

And it's not only the taste that entices people to willingly consume their full daily ration; many find that their long-lost innate thirst returns after making the switch. This is surely a clue that ionized water is a product that we should be consuming.

Other users, especially athletes, enthuse about improvements in their performance and general wellbeing since making ionized water their beverage of choice. They believe that the product's high oxygen-carrying capacity coupled with its ability to rapidly hydrate and treat lactic acid buildup have contributed to their progress.

Modern consumers have become justifiably wary of the hype and unsubstantiated claims that surround many breakthrough health products.

The benefits and cost-effectiveness of water ionization, however, can be verified by independent laboratory results and comparative tables.

With summer comes more sun and with more sun comes an extra desire to be outdoors and with spending additional time outdoors comes ? you guessed it, sunburn.

We all know the major importance of using sunscreen these days. However, even the best of us find ourselves with moments of TOO MUCH SUN. In these cases here are a couple of the best, natural summer sun remedies:

1. Lemon juice - the lemon has an anti-inflammatory function when used both internally and outwardly. When used externally, lemon dilates blood vessels in the skin and the juice works as an astringent, drawing the skin together and relieving pain.

To best apply: use cotton balls and gently apply DILUTED lemon juice to the sunburned skin.

2. Aloe-Vera Juice - this plant member of the lily family has recently been getting a lot of press for its incredible properties, but meanwhile it has been a well- respected healer for thousands of years!

Most of us are familiar with the use of Aloe Gel, but the juice (which is taken from the inner leaf?s skin) is potent as well ? if not more so as it can be applied externally and taken internally (but should not be done so by people with gastrointestinal disorders). When used externally, however, Aloe cools and encourages the skin to restore.

To best apply: dip a sterile cloth in aloe juice, place on the burned area. You can also use a spray bottle to continually keep the burned area hydrated with the aloe juice.

Summer in Houston?Tis the season for trips to the beach, picnics in the park, and enjoying the great outdoors. There is also a price to be paid for our summertime frolics. Too much fun in the sun can cause sunburn; too many barbecues can upset the stomach; and pesky flying insects abound.

Aromatherapy is the fun and holistic use of plant essential oils to treat and balance the body, mind and spirit. These oils are a natural way to minimize the effects of our Houston summer. A few ways that E/O are helpful are in skin care, cooling off, pesky critters, indigestion and the general malaise of the constant heat. I?ll first introduce you to the oils you can use for some summer complaints. Later in the article I?ll talk about specifics for applying the oils to your body.

Skin Care? Sunburn is a common problem for outdoor enthusiasts. Lavender oil is by far the most versatile essential oil in an aromatherapist?s first aid kit. It is also the best oil to use for any problem with the skin such as burns, irritations or insect bites. It is one of the few oil?s which can be used directly on the skin, or neat. For serious burns you can create a blend of oils by adding to the lavender a few drops of blue chamomile oil for it?s soothing effect (it?s expensive, but well worth the investment). Geranium oil is a cell regenerator and a few drops makes a nice addition to your blend. It is a good idea to hydrate the body first with cool water, and apply the essential oils in a moisturizer. I usually blend my oils together in the palm of my hand, add the moisturizer and smooth over my body. This treatment can be repeated up to four times a day, depending on the seriousness of the burn.

Insect bites and repellent?Mosquitoes are a nuisance through much of the year in our fair city. I find a drop or two of lavender oil on the bite with a gentle caress will ease the itching and discomfort. For flea or chigger bites I add blue chamomile to create a blend and apply neat.

Repelling mosquitoes is more difficult. There are two oils which can be used to ward of the frisky pests?citronella and garlic. The challenge here is not to offend your neighbors. I put 20 drops of citronella oil and 20 drops of emulsifier in a 4 oz spray bottle and add water. Shake well before spraying. This solution has worked well for me in the jungles of Mexico and the Amazon (the natives there are not so finicky about aroma as the natives of Montrose). The garlic solution is more potent. Current research recommends 1% garlic oil as a repellent (this solution also kills 100% of larvae with in 24 hours, even in standing water). Of course you smell like a pizzeria, but the industrial chemical alternatives aren?t much more attractive.

Cooling Off?One of the lovely effects of peppermint oil is its cooling of the skin. A cool bath with a few drops of peppermint oil creates a welcome change to the hot and sticky weather. A word of caution, peppermint oil is stimulating. Applications in the evening may inhibit a good nights rest. That?s why I suggest a few drops in a bath as opposed to the traditional 20 drops of oil per bath.

The constant heat can generate headaches. A simple treatment is to use peppermint oil, either a drop, neat on each temple or in cool compress over the forehead. If using a compress be careful of the eyes as peppermint oil can cause stinging.

Indigestion? All the holiday picnics with their barbecues, sauces, potato chips and homemade ice cream can take their toll on the digestive system. A simple remedy is to put one drop of peppermint oil on the tip of the tongue. The flavor will explode in the mouth. This is the only internal Aromatherapy treatment I recommend. Essential oils are highly concentrated and dangerous for internal use. Please respect the use of these oils. A blend of peppermint, lavender and marjoram oils massaged into the stomach area will alleviate some of the discomforts of over-indulgence.

Summertime Malaise? The oppressive heat can drain our physical strength, agitate tempers or plain just give us those summertime blues. A group of essential oils called the euphoric?s are a great way to beat the heat. These oils work through the limbic system to release endorphins, which generate a sense of well being. I work with grapefruit and bergamot oils (less expensive) as well as rose, jasmine and melissa (these are rare and precious and expensive). When coupled with the water of a bath these oils work to balance the emotions and comfort the soul.

Here are some simple terms for using aromatherapy in your home:

Neat means using the E/O directly on the skin. Many of the oils are too strong for straight applications to the body. Use E/O neat only when directed.

An emulsifier means a solution which allows the E/O to dissolve thoroughly so it can be added to water. A cup of warm, whole milk is a natural emulsifier or they can be purchased at any health-food market. In the bath this ensures that the oils distribute evenly on the surface of the water to envelope your body as you submerge into the tub.

A compress is a cloth soaked in cool or warm water.

A carrier is any oil, lotion or base that is used to blend the E/O?s together.

Here are some simple rules for creating your own home remedies:

I use high quality oils for treatments. These recipes are designed for the potency of this grade of essential oils. I use oils from Source ?Vital and Aroma Vera. Many other brands of oils available in health-food stores and boutiques are of a lesser quality. I suggest you spend the extra money to ensure quality and potency for you E/O blends.

For a massage oil or lotion you can use 20 drops of E/O per 1 oz of carrier. For severe sunburn you can use up to 50 drops of E/O per 1 oz of carrier.

For a bath you can add 20 drops of E/O to an emulsifier.

These simple guidelines can help you to use the most potent form of plant energy we have for treating the human condition. Remember to handle all essential oils with respect and they can, in turn, contribute health, balance and well being to your life. For more information about aromatherapy I use the books Aromatherapy An A?Z, by Patricia Davis and The Aromatherapy Workbook by Marcel Lavabre.

ADHD Summer Camps are a Great Way to Help Your Children Focus

Much like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) boarding schools, ADHD summer camps offer a chance for children with such a disorder to be part of an experience which will allow them to grow into better students and better individuals. These summer camps offer opportunities for those with ADHD to excel in areas of academics and social life, things that can often be difficult for those with a neurological disorder like ADHD. As with boarding schools specializing in similar practices (although they are all year long), ADHD summer camps come in a wide range of shapes and sizes so any age child can feel comfortable in such an environment. Summer camps for those with ADHD may run somewhat expensive, but when attending a summer camp could mean the difference between your child becoming a better citizen or a neurological nightmare, then price should be no problem. Furthermore, many ADHD summer camps offer great financial aid plans comparable to those offered by universities and high end boarding schools.

One of the most popular ADHD summer camps is the Talisman Summer Camp. This is a camp based out of North Carolina and is accredited by the American Camp Association. They have separate camps for those with ADHD and attention deficit disorder (ADD) as well as other childhood neurological diseases like high functioning autism and Asperger?s Syndrome. They provide children ages eight to twenty one with over one hundred and seventy acres in the western North Carolina mountains. At the Talisman ADHD summer camps, kids are broken into groups based on their age and which program they wish to do. Younger children can engage in programs designed to get them used to the camping environment or prepare them for things they will soon learn in school. For adolescents, there are pioneer activities and exploration programs so they can alternate between the classroom and the camping site. Finally, for teenagers, Talisman ADHD summer camps offer a variety of land and water based expeditions to teach kids how to hike, mountain climb, swim and sail. People have the option of enrolling in either co-ed or individual gender programs, whichever suits the child?s and the parents? needs. Enrollment prices for children with ADHD at Talisman range from around two to three thousand dollars.

The California SOAR (Success Oriented Achievement Realized) ADHD summer camps are a great opportunity for children living with ADHD on the west coast. Taking place at Big Sur, this program offers a variety of beach and forest activities for children ages eleven to eighteen. They take fourteen students at a time for a ten day adventure. During their time at the SOAR ADHD summer camps, students will learn surfing, mountain biking, camping, fishing, rock climbing and kayaking. From there, the program will move to an area where the children can learn horseback riding and hiking. Finally, the group will set off to the Channel Islands just off the coast of California for two days amongst the untouched wildlife there. The tuition for the SOAR ADHD summer camps in California is two thousand three hundred dollars.

Summer brings a lot of fantastic things with it, but one of the healthiest for those of us in the colder climates is more fresh food. The growing season has started and is shifting into full gear. Keep your eyes open for these foods to help your summer be absolutely luscious.

Glorious Greens

Most of my clients who have worked with me individually have experienced learning how to use greens for the benefit of their individual body. Green vegetables are the food most missing in modern diets. Nutritionally, greens are very high in calcium (120 -190 mg per cup!) They're also high in magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorous, zinc, and they are a power house for Vitamin A, C, E and K. Believe it or not, they are also crammed high with fiber, folic acid, chlorophyll and many other micro-nutrients and phyto-chemicals ? you just can?t get any better than this. For summer, however, here are two to really take advantage of:

1) Lovage ? according to K?Eogh, an 18th century Irish herbalist, this strong scented herb, ?expels flatulence; clears the sight; removes spots, freckles and redness; provokes urination and menstruation; and aids digestion ? and is aptly used in love potions?. Sounds like the makings for fabulous salad fixins? to me!

This green also happens to be tasty, too, and is similar to celery in its appearance. Not only is it yummy raw, but it retains its flavor in slow cooking soups and stews.

2) Watercress ? a known immune booster. This powerful green is valuable for treating colds and coughs, but in general also helps maintain vigorous workings of both the thyroid and endocrine glands. This makes it perfect for an extra summer-time energy boost, not to mention that it has a dramatic, spicy bite!

When buying: look for fresh leaflets of an evenly spread, darkish color. Don?t buy or eat any yellowish leaves that you discover.

When storing: place the stems in cold water and refrigerate. Use within 1 day as this leaf is grown in cold spring water and doesn?t keep well when it?s dry.

The human body benefits from sun exposure. And a little bit of tan protects you from the sun. Right? Wrong!

The body does indeed benefit from sun exposure. But a little bit of tan does not necessarily protect you from the sun.

Let?s see why...

The sun?s rays are a major source of vitamin D and help the body?s systems acquire much needed calcium for building hearty bones. However, most people do not need to spend large amounts of time exposed to the sun in order to get their required amount of vitamin D and shouldn?t. Because the body?s health can suffer negative effects when it?s exposed too long to the sun?s rays, especially if it?s unprotected.

Results can vary from skin and eye damage to immune system suppression and ultimately cancer, even for the young.

In a nutshell, let?s look at the basic facts about sun exposure.

There are three kinds of invisible ultraviolet (UV) rays in the sun that reaches earth: UVA, UVB, and UVC. When these rays come in contact with our skin, affects of UVA and UVB can be tans, burns and other reactions like acne and cancer. So we need to be proactive and protect our skin from harmful damage.

It is notable that the effects of all UV rays are not the same. Depending upon the season, time of day and place on the planet in relation to the sun; i.e. your altitude and latitude, the rays? intensities vary. For example, during summertime, UV rays are at their strongest. Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the rays are strongest.

And close to the equator and at high altitudes (where air and cloud cover are less, resulting in increased harmful penetration of UV rays into the environment), the rays are strongest.

In order to protect ourselves from the harmful UV rays, we need to first look at the skin?s first defense, melanin, a chemical present in a variety of colors and concentrations in most people's skin that helps with defense from the sun.

Melanin reacts with UV rays and absorbs them. Or rather the rays act upon melanin, to be more specific, causing the melanin to spread out or grow, increasing its presence in response to the sun?s exposure, resulting in a sun tan.

The darker the skin color, the more melanin the skin has for protection. And ?tanning? for darker color is included here; ?color? does not have to refer to just the original skin color.

Tanning may look great on the surface, but the amount and length of time a person is exposed to the sun determines the amount of possible damage and future risk of damage that?s likely. For example, people who are exposed to the sun in huge doses like ship crews, field workers and beach surfers, are at higher risks for skin damage than indoor workers. What happens is that when the amount of UV exposure is greater than what the skin's melanin can handle, a sunburn can result. And those with lighter, fairer skin who have less melanin, absorb less UV, suffering less protection.

Research shows that UV damage from the sun is the main cause of skin cancer. In fact, the U.S. Environmental Protection (EPA) reported that one person dies from skin cancer every hour and one out of every five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime.

We have repeatedly heard the negative message about the damage of ultraviolet (UV) rays since the 1980?s. The message?s focal point was that about 80 percent of people?s lifetime dose of radiation was obtained by the time they reach 18 years of age, damage from the sun?s rays having had a cumulative effect throughout life. As a result, once young men and women finished with their school years, many tossed aside the concept of skin-protection, not believing there was anything that could be done from that point on to help.

However, recent studies show that the previous negative message may not be true.

A report published last year by ?Photochemistry and Photobiology? journal, said that the false information was a result of misinterpretation of published data in a mathematical sense. And another, shared by the Netherlands and the United States, concluded that by age 18, most people are only exposed to less than 25 percent of their lifetime UV dose.

SKIN TYPES & SPF

Regardless of color, skin responds that repeatedly is exposed to the sun tends to become tough and thick. The results can be leathery skin with wrinkles beyond the middle years of adulthood. What can help is using a sunscreen product with some degree of protection from UV rays, listed as the concentration on the SPF (Sun Protection Factor) numbers on the products? labels. These sunscreen products can be made with ingredients that offer protection against UVA rays and / or other ingredients to protect against UVB rays (more harmful for sun burning than UVA rays.) The best products offer ingredients for protection from both UVA and UVB rays.

The SPF listed on the product label refers to the minimum amount of UVB sunlight required with that product in order for redness to appear on the skin after that product has been applied, versus the length of time bare skin or skin without the product applied would redden. To sum that up, the basic math involved in using the SPF number is like this. The SPF number tells people how much longer they can last out in the sun with protection for their skin without being burned. For example, say a young school student would normally burn after 12 minutes of being out in the sun. He applies a sunscreen, also referred to as a sun block, with an SPF of 15. This means that he should be fine for 15 times his average amount of protection time. In other words, he would be protected for up to 3 hours.

Here is the formula for calculating:

12 minutes x 15 SPF = 180 minutes (3 hours).

So in short, sunscreen products with a high SPF provide more protection against the sun. Here is a closer look at different skin types and their preferred SPFs:

Young children ? For ages 6 months on up, you should apply a product with SPF of 15 or higher to protect against both sun tanning and burning. And the product label should list protection against both UVA and UVB rays also known as the broad-spectrum.

Skin Type - Very Fair ? This skin type generally burns quickly. Tanning is rare, or minimally not common. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 20 to 30.

Skin Type ? Fair ? This skin type almost always burns easily. Tanning can occur some, not much. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 12 to 20.

Skin Type ? Light ? This skin type burns in the moderate range. Tanning is normally gradual, yielding a light brown shade. It is recommended that sunscreen products for for this skin type contain SPF 8 to 12.

Skin Type ? Medium ? This skin type burns in the minimal range. Tanning happens much of the time, yielding a moderate brown shade. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 4 to 8.

Skin Type ? Dark ? This skin type rarely burns. Tanning occurs big time, yielding a dark brown shade. It is recommended that sunscreen products for this skin type contain SPF 2 to 4.

Skin Type ? Other - This skin type includes people with moles or whose close blood relatives have a history of moles, people with skin cancer in their family histories, including melanoma, and people with very fair skin and hair. Use the highest SPF available combined with light to moderate sun exposure, as this is a high-risk category for health damage from too much UV exposure.

Note that regardless of skin type, before going out into the sun?s rays, each person should have the most suitable sunscreen product possible applied beforehand for protection against UV rays. The product should be spread fairly thick and in a uniform manner for the best possible UV protection over all areas of the skin that will be exposed to the UV rays.

Whether you tan year round, during the summer or only before a vacation or holiday you should always use a tanning bed lotion. There are several benefits to a good lotion for both enhancing your color and protecting your skin. Although the only safe tan can be obtained through sunless tanning, a good lotion will make the process safer than lying in beds with no protection at all.

The health risks of tan beds have been well publicized. The most common risks include melanoma, a dangerous form of skin cancer and premature aging of the skin. Using a good tan product won?t completely protect you from these risks, but can keep you from wrinkling like a prune.

5 Benefits of Tanning Bed Lotion

A good lotion moisturizes the skin. Ultraviolet light id drying to the skin on your body and face. A good lotion with high quality ingredients nourishes the skin and replenishes lost moisture. In addition, it firms and soothes the skin. An after tan lotion and moisturizer between sessions helps improve the condition of your skin.

A good lotion can help prevent some of the damage caused by exposure to UV rays. Antioxidant ingredients, such as vitamin E and grapefruit extract, help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. This helps reduce some of the signs of premature aging that are caused by the regular use of tanning beds. Special lotions are available to protect the skin around the eyes. You should also wear goggles to protect this sensitive skin.

They help shorten your exposure to Ultraviolet light. Since you tan faster with a lotion, you will need to spend less time in the bed than you would without a cream. More time in the bed results in a higher risk of skin damage or cancer.

Some products have a cooling effect on the skin. These are great for people with sensitivity to heat. A cooling lotion lessens this heat sensitivity and makes the tan bed experience much more comfortable.

Using lotion accelerates the tanning process. Ingredients in some products are added to accelerate the tan and give you a more intense color. These cause a tingling feeling on the skin.

Quality Ingredients in Tanning Bed Lotion

Choose a product with high quality ingredients for the best protection. Look for natural botanicals, plant extracts and essential oils. Some good ingredients include:

oMethyl Nicotinate is used to accelerate the tanning process
oAntioxidant ingredients are added to help reduce the signs of premature aging
oNatural plant extracts are added to soothe and moisturize the skin. These ingredients include aloe, coconut and other plant ingredients.
oEssential oils moisturize and nourish the skin

Choosing a Tanning Bed Lotion

When selecting an indoor tan product, consider your skin tone and level of tanning experience. Many products are labelled for skin type or level of tanning. Some products are intended for advanced tanning and should never be used by a beginner or someone with fair skin. Doing this can cause damage to the skin.

The owner of the salon can assist you in selecting the best lotion for your skin type and the bed you will be using. Some salons carry small, sample sized packages. These allow you to try a few products before investing in a large bottle. Once you have chosen the right product, look for it at discount or wholesale prices on the internet.

How could a successful dentist, who was honored at the May 1993 five day 50th anniversary meeting of the American Association of Endodontists(root canal therapists) for being one of the nineteen founding members of the organization, ever come to publish a book of this critical nature?

Some dentist argue that the bacteria die off because the root canal filling blocks off their source of nutritions. Unfortunately, this is not the case. In fact, the bacteria are capable of mutating and changing their form. Dr. Price, DDS, FACD, found that thee challenge of changed environment actually caused the organisms to become virile and their toxins much more toxic. It will interest you to know that this discovery of Dr. Price's was confirmed in recent times by a German oncologist named Dr. Josef Issel. He was able to identify these toxins and found them to be closely related to thee same chemicals used by the Germans in World War I to make mustard gas.

The bacteria which contribute to most of today's disease no longer can be killed by antibiotics because the same poly- morphic ability of bacteria to mutate, change and adjust that happens in root canals is happening to these organisms in response to antibiotics. Thsese bacteria are involved in most illnesses.

Millions of people are ill, suffering from degenerative diseases for which the medical profession is at a loss regarding cause and treatment; the degenerative disease problem continues to bankrupt our people and country. These two extremely alarming issues, and the light root-canal research sheds upon them, persuaded me to blow the whistle and alert the public to Price's substantial findings, which could help them so trementously.

Being overweight in the summer heat is no fun. And exposing a fat stomach or fat thighs isn't exactly pleasant when everyone else around you is wearing gnat-sized beachwear and drizzling oil onto wasp-like abdomens. In fact, for people carrying excess weight, summer can be an unpleasant trial involving countless opportunities for embarassment and discomfort. So let's take a look at how you can reduce some of your fat and make next summer a happier experience. But first, a warning.

Summer Weight Loss Trap

One guaranteed way to fail is to look for a short cut weight loss method or diet. You know what I mean: the type of program that promises a fast effortless way to reduce weight. In my experience, none of these diets or pills actually work, and the medical evidence is quite clear: the maximum rate of sustainable fat loss is between 1 and 2 pounds per week, perhaps a little more if you are obese. Besides, if a brilliant scientist did manage to concoct a formula for rapid effortless weight reduction, overnight he would be more famous than Einstein. He certainly wouldn't be peddling his program in 30-second TV infommercials or mail-order advertisements. So for the sake of your sanity as well as your financial health, don't waste time on weight loss methods that make extravagant claims. If you don't believe this, think of any of your overweight friends who favor the short-term lose 20 pounds in two weeks type of approach, and ask yourself why they are still overweight.

Three Month Summer Diet Plan

You can't lose much weight in a week or two. You need about three months to make a significant impact on your body shape. Remember, the human body is interested in survival, not cosmetic appearances, and since rapid weight loss is a prima facie symptom of disease not good health, the only guaranteed way to improve your body shape is to adopt a gradual approach of healthy eating and increased exercise. In three months, you can lose about 26 pounds - more than enough for most overweight people to experience noticeable health improvements as well as a much leaner body. And by reducing your weight gradually in this manner, you have far less chance of weight regain, so if necessary you can continue losing more with less danger of incurring a weight loss plateau or other obstacle.

You Need A Motive

No one likes to change their habits. So if you want to change your eating and exercise habits, you need a strong motive - something to keep you dieting and exercising when boredom sets in. Whatever motive you choose, it must be something more powerful than the urge to eat tasty high calorie foods in front of the TV!

A Good Motive For Summer Weight Loss

Anything that commits you in advance to achieving your weight loss goal, makes a great motive. So be bold. Book an expensive beach holiday, or buy some gorgeous clothes to fit the body you want to have at the end of your diet program. Both these actions require you to succeed, and therefore provide constant motivation along the way.

Men And Celebrities Have Better Motivation

In my experience, both with private clients as well as dieters who belong to my weight loss forum, men and celebrities exhibit the strongest motivation. Men, I suspect, because typically they have a narrower range of daily tasks and responsibilities than women. Celebrities, because typically they have a powerful commercial motivation to maintain their physical appearance. I offer weight loss help to a number of celebrity figures, some of whom are regulars on my forum, and I am always impressed with their ability to make short-term sacrifices to further their longer term goals. I guess that's why they achieve so much.

Be Positive About Short Term Sacrifices

Whether you're trying to lose weight for the summer, save money or pass exams, an important piece of the motivational jigsaw is your ability to be positive about making short term sacrifices. The choice is fairly simple: you can focus on the deprivation involved in giving up certain foods, or you can focus on the benefits you will get by not eating these foods. Sadly, many dieters focus on feeling deprived. After a while they see their diet as a burden, a bore, an evil necessity. This is why so many of them quit. They can't see the benefits that weight loss will bring them. If you want to improve your body shape for the summer, you must avoid this trap and appreciate the longer term benefits you will receive by making short-term adjustments to your lifestyle.

The Good News About Improving Your Diet

Many of our tastes, food cravings, and general attitudes to food are strongly influenced by what we eat and drink. I know countless mothers with families who have reported astonishing changes in their personal and family eating habits after less than three weeks of improved eating. Point is, the average modern diet is loaded with sugar, fat and sodium, all of which condition us to want more of these items. But if you can break out of this dependence on junk-ingredients for even 2-3 weeks, you'll notice a huge difference in your tastes. Which brings me to healthy eating.

Think Healthy Eating Not Weight Loss

In my experience, one of the most effective weight loss strategies is to focus on healthy eating. I'm not saying you shouldn't stand on your weighing scales, just don't measure progress exclusively by what the scales say. Be aware that it's just as important to enjoy your food and feel good about your change of eating habits. And any diet you hate is guaranteed to fail, no matter how much weight you lose, because as soon as you achieve your goal, you will revert to your old eating habits and regain every pound lost.

The Top 10 Healthy Eating Habits

In a nutshell, a healthy diet involves (1) More home-cooked food, less eating out. (2) More fresh fruit as snacks. (3) More fresh vegetables as snacks and with meals. (4) More beans as sides or in stews. (5) More dense chewy bread, less refined white breads and bread snacks. (6) More fish, skinless chicken/turkey, less red meat. (7) Smaller servings of red meat, larger servings of vegetables. (8) Eating low fat dairy foods. (9) Adding less fat in the form of butter, mayo, sour cream, to the food on your plate. This is a huge source of excessive calories. (10) Stocking up with healthy snack foods to keep hunger at bay. If you fill up with healthy nutritious calories, you won't want the junk foods that hunger makes you eat. As far as weight management goes, hunger remains Public Enemy Number One.

Exercise Provides Wonderful Indirect Benefits

Exercise does burn extra calories and therefore does help to widen your calorie deficit. But it's direct effect on weight loss is typically quite small. In fact, it's not uncommon to gain weight when you start exercising. The real weight reduction benefits of exercise are indirect ones. It raises our metabolic rate, helping us to burn calories at a slightly faster rate, and improves our mood, which typically reduces our need for comfort-eating. However, don't overdo your exercise workouts. I've lost count of the number of dieters who started exercising too vigorously and burnt out within 3 weeks. Ideally, start with 45 minutes/day of any physical activity you can easily manage, and very gradually increase the duration and intensity. Listen to your body at all times, and be sure to loosen up beforehand and wind down afterwards.

See Yourself As You Want To Be

If your goal is a waistline you can proudly display in the sun, then don't wait until it happens to see it. Visualize it from the moment you start dieting. Visualize yourself walking along a beach, or lying next to the pool with a perfectly flat stomach. Whatever your ambition for your weight or body, get used to visualizing it in the greatest possible detail. Because seeing it is the first step to making it come true. As they say, one picture is worth a thousand words.

Very Overweight? Just Visualize The Benefits!

If you have a lot of weight to lose (100 pounds+), you may not think that losing 26 pounds in three months is particularly worthwhile. If so, ask yourself this question. What's the alternative? No matter what method you choose, you won't lose weight any faster, so it's only a question of when you start and how long it's going to take. I can answer the last question right now. Losing 100 pounds takes about a year - typically a little longer to allow for disasters along the way. Fifteen months would be a more realistic time span to reduce weight by this amount. This is nothing. Just visualize yourself walking down the street 100 pounds lighter, and tell me that eating healthily for 15 months is too high a price to pay for such a wonderful prospect.

Your First Priority - Get Support

If you really want to lose weight for the summer, your first priority is to find support. Join a diet-group at work, or a fitness class, or go to weight loss meetings. Or join an online forum. Losing weight on your own is perfectly possible, providing things go well and your scales keep saying nice things. But when difficulties arise, as they surely will, having the support of real people can make all the difference between success and failure. If you experience difficulty finding support, try my own weight loss forum. It's great fun and very inspirational.

Summertime is near. And with the days getting longer and warmer, out come the shorts, mini-skirts, and bare legs.

Like most women, I?ve tried it all: shaving, waxing, depilatories? you name it. While I do love the benefits of waxing, waiting a couple of weeks during the summer for the hair to get long enough to wax is not my idea of a good time. And I?ve never had success with depilatories.

So what?s a girl to do? Fall back on our old friend: the razor.

While shaving is definitely the easiest, quickest, and least expensive hair-removal option, shaving still comes with its own problems: most notably nicks, cuts, and the dreaded ?razor burn.? But it doesn?t have to. There are some very simple (and economical!) things you can do to avoid the pit-falls of shaving.

Follow these five easy steps that will keep you and your razor friends?all the way through the long, lazy days of summer:

  • Exfoliate, Exfoliate, Exfoliate. I can?t stress this enough. Exfoliation helps to smooth the skin by remove dead skin cells while softening the coarse hair on your legs. And that adds up to smoother, easier shaving.

Grab your trusty scrub puff or a washcloth and a moisturizing body wash. You don?t need to scrub hard, as the puff or washcloth will do most of the work. (And while you?re at it, wash your whole body like this?your skin will glow!

  • Save the Shave ?Til the End. While it?s not quite like saving the best for last, waiting until the end of your shower will make shaving much easier. Ask any man. They usually wait until the end (or after) their shower to shave, giving their stubble time to soften. Not only is it easier to shave, but it allows for a much closer shave.

The hair on your legs is coarse and needs time to soften in the hot water. Shaving at the beginning of your shower or bath, before the hair softens, will almost guarantee nicks, cuts and/or razor-burn. So to save yourself some pain?and get smoother legs?by saving the shaving until the end.

  • Use a New(er) Blade. This one may seem like a no-brainer, but so many women don?t change blades often enough. While I couldn?t find statistics from any of the razor companies as to how many shaves a you can get from one disposable blade, the women in my informal poll agree that a razor blade is usually only good for about 10 shaves. And that number can be even less if you have very heavy or very coarse hair.

You know when it?s not sharp enough. It may feel dull or like it?s pulling at your skin. It may look old. Or you may realize that you can?t remember the last time you changed it. But the rule of thumb: it?s better to change too often than not often enough. A dull blade is more likely to cause nicks, cuts and razor-burn.

So switch out that old blade with a new one. Just remember that a new blade is sharp?so always shave slowly and carefully!

  • Use Conditioner. If you only remember one tip from this article, remember this: conditioner is the best substance to use to shave with! Yes, I?m talking about hair conditioner. Conditioner provides a thin layer of protection on your skin, helps the blade glide smoothly, and further softens your hair.

I keep a large bottle of inexpensive conditioner in my shower (I get the jumbo size from Costco, with a pump in it?which also makes it easier to dispense) that is dedicated for shaving. Use about the same amount that you do when putting lotion on your legs. Make sure you rinse your blade well after shaving. Try this tip once and you?ll never go back to soap or shaving cream again!

  • Moisturize While Wet. This is the final step to the pain-free shave. You can moisturize with one of the new in-shower lotions, the kind that you put on and then rinse off in the shower. Or, after turning off the water but before reaching for your towel, you can moisturize with body oil or baby oil.

I keep a bottle of almond oil in the shower, and add my favorite aromatherapy oils to it. Not only will your skin retain more moisture this way, but you also won?t be rubbing lotion onto dry skin?a combination I have found almost guarantees razor burn.

  • Incorporate these simple tips into your shaving routine and you?ll be on your way to smooth and sexy legs, all summer long!

The ?Dog Days? of summer are almost upon us and record temperatures are sweeping the country. Unfortunately we have the highest number of elderly and medically fragile people in history, and an aging infrastructure that is feeling the strain of heavy electrical use as our senior citizens struggle to stay cool.

We?re here to give you tips and tricks to help you beat the heat should you be susceptible to extreme temperatures, or should your power be out. Here?s a short list of suggestions:

    1. Drink plenty of cool water to keep yourself hydrated and reduce your body?s core temperature. (Warm water won?t do this, and cold water might be a shock to sensitive systems.) Drink regularly, every hour, even if you don?t feel thirsty. Avoid soft drinks and alcoholic drinks that are actually diuretic and rob your body of the water it desperately needs.

    2. Eat small, light, non-spicy meals. Eating heavy meals cranks your metabolism and can raise your body temperature. Also, digestion robs you of energy. Since the heat is already robbing you of some energy, you don?t need to add to this drain by taxing the digestive system. However, don?t skip meals since it?s food that replenishes the electrolytes you lose through sweating and increased water consumption.

    3. Some sources suggest you wear ?light colored, loose fitting clothes.? However, that?s only if you?re going outside. If you go outside, go with that rule and also wear a loose fitting hat or carry an umbrella for shade. Forget the fashion rules, follow the heat rules. (By the way, royal blue and/or white are the best colors to wear for their heat reflective qualities. Ever wonder why most tarps and boat awnings are blue? This is why.) For indoors though, forget all those rules and go with the ?bare as you dare? notion. The more exposed skin you have the more efficient your cooling-by-sweating process can work. Also, be sure to tie up long hair, and if you have a beard, consider shaving in order to remove all that facial insulation.

    4. Though ?bare as you dare? is the way to go indoors in limited AC, most of us would prefer to have good air conditioning. If yours is out, or if power sources are uncertain, go someplace that has AC like the mall or other places that don?t mind people coming in and hanging around a while. Also, you can ?AC pool? with friends just like you?d car pool. Go to a friend?s house who has a good AC system.

    5. Failing to find another source of AC, and considering that the power might be out, here are a couple more tips. First, stand-alone floor unit air conditioners aren?t that expensive and can run off regular household current without the need for the special 220 volt outlets. This means that they can be operated using the smaller gas-powered electric generators. Can?t afford a generator? You can probably afford a power inverter which can sometimes be found for under twenty dollars. They plug into your car?s cigarette lighter and, using an extension cord, can power an appliance like your stand-alone AC, or at least some fans. Speaking of your car, if nothing else, if your car has AC you can ride around during the hottest hours of the day, providing you can afford today?s gas prices. If absolutely nothing else, go to your nearest ?dollar store? and see if they have any of those little battery-powered fans.

    6. Can?t afford a stand-alone AC but you have a generator? Your generator or power inverter can also power your fridge and/or freezer where you should have two-liter plastic bottles full of water filling up every empty space in both the fridge and freezer parts. Having cold water is a great thing. You drink cool water and use cold water to soak towels to wrap around your neck, wrists, and ankles where the veins and arteries are closest to the surface. This is one of the best ways to reduce your body temperature. Also, setting up a few of the frozen two-liter bottles in front of a fan can blow a nice cool breeze your way. (Write us at info@disasterprep101.com and we?ll email you instructions for a homemade AC unit that uses these two-liter plastic bottles.)

    7. Now that we?ve talked about keeping you cool in the heat, let?s backtrack a bit and talk about reducing the heat you might experience. Naturally, the first rule is ?block the sun.? Do what you can to reduce the sunlight that hits your house or comes in through the windows. Keep the shades drawn, and you might even consider hanging a white sheet or blue tarp as an outside awning on the side(s) of the house that catch the most sun. These tarps are also effective if placed on the roof as they?ll reflect the sun?s rays.

    8. Next in cooling the house come ventilation and insulation. If you have an attic, and the power is on, you should have a vent fan that keeps air flowing through the attic. Along with that, we suggest you have roof vent turbines, or a ridge vent (your home supply store can tell you all about these). In extremely hot weather, you might set a garden sprinkler on your roof and let it run for the hottest couple of hours of the day provided your area is not on water restriction. As for ?insulation? one way to insulate parts of the house is to close off seldom-used rooms (especially those on the sunny side of the house), and close off their AC vents if any. This blocks heat and also reduces the area that your limited AC has to cool.

While we?re here, we?d be remiss in our duties if we failed to give you the symptoms of sunstroke and heat exhaustion, both of which require medical attention:

Heat Exhaustion: Symptoms include heavy sweating, and skin may be pale, cool, or flushed. The victim will also exhibit a weak pulse, with fainting, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting.

Sun Stroke (sometimes called heat stroke): Symptoms are high body temperature, hot, dry, red, skin (usually with no sweating), rapid shallow breathing, and a weak pulse. Sun stroke is the more dangerous of the two.

The most immediate first aid for either of these is to get the victim into a cool spot, and reduce their body temperature with ice-cold wet towels around the neck, wrist, and ankles. You can also put them in a bathtub of cool water. Don?t use cold water in the tub as that will shock the system. Regardless of your first aid measures, you should seek immediate medical assistance.

Remember, hot weather is nothing to ignore, even if you?re not among the elderly or medically fragile. Heat can affect everyone. Play it safe, stay cool, avoid exertion, and stay healthy. Also, when considering heat safety, don?t forget your pets.

Keeping your holiday hair style under control isn't just about keeping your expensive up-do from falling down while you're dancing. It's about healthy-looking hair during those wet, hot, and sticky months of summer, whether at home or on vacation.

Those who live in areas where the sun and humidity get downright unbearable during the summer know how difficult it is to keep their hair looking good. But if you aren't familiar with the potentially damaging effects of humidity, salt water, sand, chlorine, wind and dry air, you might not know how to properly care for your holiday hair.

It's easy to breathe new life into it by following a few simple summertime tips.

Hair that's full of split ends looks bad so the first thing you should do even before the summer months set in is give your hair a good trim to remove those damaged ends or try a new hair style. Hair looks instantly better after it's been cut.

If you plan to color your hair, remember that chemically treated hair is more vulnerable to environmental conditions such as sun, water and humidity. Plan your hair coloring three weeks before your trip so your hair has time to regain its natural balance and is more resistance to damage.

Another thing you can do is ask your stylist for a deep conditioning treatment prior to your vacation. This will help to smooth the hair, repair damage and make the whole hair structure stronger.

Depending on your destination climate, you might also need to bring a surface conditioner with moisturizing qualities for hot, dry weather or frizz control cream for a humid climate. Unlike deep conditioners, these products coat your hair with a protective layer while adding gloss and making your style more manageable.

It just wouldn't be a summer vacation without time in the water. Although swimming and other water activities are a lot of fun, they can wreak havoc on your holiday hair. Whether you're swimming in the sea or at the hotel pool, always rinse the sea salt and chlorine out of your hair with plenty of fresh water.

Chlorine dries out the hair, making it brittle. It also fades the color and with some hair colors, can turn hair an unsightly shade of green. It's not the chlorine that turns your hair green but the presence of heavy metals like copper. The chlorine initiates the process by damaging the hair cuticle, which allows these metals to enter the inner structure of hair.

It also wouldn't be a summer vacation without spending as much time as possible in the sun. We know how damaging the sun's UV rays are to our skin, but these rays also damage the hair's structure. They break down the keratin which results in dry hair that breaks easily. So look for hair care products that contain UV protection and use them as directed to help your holiday hair style look as healthy as your holiday tan.

Lots of people with fine hair apply too much anti-frizz serum to their scalp and hair, which makes it look greasy and weighed down. Instead, apply a light conditioner beginning at the middle of the hair strand and continuing down to the ends. Then finish your hair style with anti-frizz serum applied only to the ends to seal off the tips so water can't enter the hair shaft.

When you're packing your suitcase, be sure you include a mild shampoo, a mild conditioner, an anti-frizz serum (especially if you have naturally curly hair), and hair spray for those times when your holiday hair needs extra hold. And check to make sure all these products contain UV protection. Just remember: using UV products doesn't mean you can stay out in the sun indefinitely. Your hair and scalp can be damaged if exposed to too much sun so don't forget to bring a sun hat.

A variety of hair styles, colors, and trends are growing in popularity for 2005. New hair styles for 2005 include hair of varying lengths, from curly and wavy to sleek and straight. Some of the old standbys from 2004 are still going to be popular in 2005.

The straight look is still in. The messy look and the shabby chic look are also still going strong. The soft wavy look is one new addition to the in list that has been growing in popularity this season.

This season, one of the hottest looks is a short cut. Not just any short cut though. The newest version of the short hair cut is longer layers and fringe in the front with the back cut in shorter, softer layers. The great thing about this style is that, even though it is short, you still have a variety of options when styling it. It can be worn straight and smooth for a more sophisticated look. If a more youthful and fun look is in the cards for your day, simply tousle the layers for a more wind blown, wavy look.

Your hair?s texture is also an important part of the cut and style. Layers and soft edges give a cut the versatility that it needs to hold more than one style. Razor cutting is a terrific way to accomplish the flipped, wild look that celebrities like Meg Ryan wear. Using sculpting gels and waxes can give you a chunky layer look that separates and holds your layers in place. For a smoother, sleek look, layers can be blown dry to lay flat and soft against the face. Smoothing gels can help to keep hair smooth and free from frizz for hours at a time.

Although cut and texture are an important part of having a trendy, up to date short hair style, maintaining shiny, healthy hair is always a must.

Whether you wear your hair curly, wavy, or straight, a healthy shine is your hair?s best accessory. For this season, a product that adds shine to your hair is a must have.

To maintain a trendy and fashionable look for this season, color is the key. In Eastern cultures, hair color choice is not just a statement about our fashion savvy, but also is essential in showing our inner self and desires. Since red symbolizes strength and vitality, it is not such a surprise that most women today would pick red as their first choice of hair colors.

Red certainly is a trend this season, and that means all shades. Anything goes from burgundy to strawberry blonde on into the copper hues.

As a matter of fact, reds are beginning to replace blonde as the most popular hair color choice.

Color highlights have been popular for while and will continue to be popular this season. This type of hair coloring works particularly well on the layered, shorter haircuts. So, go ahead. Try whatever floats your boat. As I said before, this season, anything goes!
